    The Northern RouteRemote & Dry
    Why Rongai?

Kilimanjaro’s Only Approach from the North

The Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. It offers a quieter, more remote experience with lower crowds than Machame or Marangu. Because it lies in the rain shadow of the mountain, Rongai is significantly drier – making it an excellent choice during the rainy season (April–May and November).

The route starts with a gentle trek through farmland and pine forest, then crosses heath and moorland before joining the Marangu route near Kibo Hut. You’ll enjoy unique views of the mountain’s northern slopes and into Kenya. The 7‑day itinerary includes an extra acclimatization day at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, boosting summit success to around 85%.

    Camping with Views of Kenya

Rongai is a full camping route but with a unique character – you start on the northern side, looking across the border into Kenya. The terrain is drier and the trails are much quieter, giving you a genuine sense of remoteness.

Highlights include the Mawenzi Tarn, a beautiful alpine lake at 4,330m with stunning reflections of Mawenzi peak. Because Rongai receives less rain, you’ll enjoy clearer skies and fewer muddy trails – perfect for photographers.

Note: All camping equipment is provided (tents, sleeping mats, dining tent, toilet tent). You only need to bring your personal sleeping bag (can be hired) and daypack.
