    Why Marangu?

Kilimanjaro’s Only Route with Permanent Huts

The Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca‑Cola Route”, is the oldest and most established path on Kilimanjaro. Its main advantage: you sleep in comfortable mountain huts (Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo Huts) – no tents, no sleeping on the ground. This makes it the best choice for budget travellers, first‑time climbers, and those who prefer a bit more comfort.

The route approaches from the southeast, passing through lush rainforest, moorland, and alpine desert. The 6‑day itinerary includes an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut, boosting your summit success rate to around 70% – significantly higher than the 5‑day option (approx. 55%). For experienced trekkers short on time, the 5‑day climb is still a viable challenge.

What to Expect at the Huts

Unlike other routes where you sleep in tents, Marangu offers permanent A‑frame huts with bunk beds, mattresses, and communal dining areas. Mandara Hut (2,700m) has 60 bunks, Horombo Hut (3,720m) has 120 bunks, and Kibo Hut (4,703m) has 60 bunks – all with basic but comfortable facilities.

Solar lighting, flush toilets (at lower huts), and a warm dining hall where your chef serves hot meals. This makes Marangu the best choice for those who prefer a roof over their head and don’t want to carry a tent.

Note: Kibo Hut is basic – prepare for summit night. But the warmth and protection from wind/rain make a huge difference.
